Hon. Sir Farimang Saho serves as the Honorary Consul of Hungary to The Gambia, providing a local point of contact for Hungary and contributing to the development of relations between the two countries.
The Honorary Consulate operates in coordination with the Embassy of Hungary in Accra, the Hungarian diplomatic mission responsible for The Gambia. From its office in The Gambia, the Honorary Consul supports appropriate communication between Hungarian and Gambian individuals, institutions and businesses and helps direct enquiries to the relevant authorities where necessary.
An important part of the Honorary Consul's work is strengthening the human connections that underpin relations between the two countries. This includes supporting educational and cultural engagement, encouraging business and institutional connections, assisting Hungarian nationals within the scope of the office's mandate, and helping Gambians seeking appropriate information about Hungary.
Education has become an increasingly visible part of this relationship. As more Gambian students pursue studies in Hungary through the Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship Programme, the Office has supported students with local guidance and preparation while coordinating, where appropriate, with the Embassy of Hungary in Accra.
The Honorary Consul also encourages legitimate opportunities for cooperation between Hungarian and Gambian businesses and institutions. The Office may facilitate appropriate introductions, provide local context and help identify relevant organisations or authorities. Such assistance does not constitute commercial endorsement, legal advice or a guarantee of any business relationship.
The Office also promotes greater awareness of Hungary in The Gambia and of The Gambia among Hungarian visitors, institutions and businesses. This website forms part of that effort, providing a platform for practical information, official announcements, educational opportunities, business information and greater understanding between the peoples of both countries.
The Honorary Consulate is, however, not an Embassy and does not exercise the full functions of an Embassy or career consulate. It does not issue visas, determine visa applications, issue residence permits or make decisions on Hungarian immigration matters. Matters requiring formal consular or diplomatic authority are referred to the Embassy of Hungary in Accra or the appropriate Hungarian authority.
Through this role, Hon. Sir Farimang Saho and the Office of the Honorary Consul seek to provide a practical bridge between Hungary and The Gambia and to contribute, within the Office's mandate, to the continued strengthening of relations between the two countries.
